Be particularly attentive to new members. They are bound to feel like outsiders at first. If you’ve ever joined a club or athletic team whose members all knew each other and enjoyed many common experiences, you know the feeling. You were the outsider—the oddball. The regulars all seemed comfortable with each other; you, the newcomer, felt isolated—not one of the group.

On a team, new members generally don’t contribute fully until they have gotten to know their coworkers and have learned how to interact and apply their talents. The leader and members can shorten this unproductive period by making the newcomer feel welcome and by getting him or her quickly engaged in team projects. Don’t expect this new person to figure out which end is up. If it seems appropriate, plan a little social event around his or her arrival.

In the end, anything you do to foster team identity will pay dividends in team performance.
